Essence director Kim Davis-Powell was added to the list, and for good reason. For over two decades, Davis-Powell has been a staple of excellence in girl’s grassroots basketball based out of Tallahassee, Florida. Her mentoring, coaching, and organizational abilities helped to produce scholarships for over 250 young ladies throughout the years. Essence, is an original gold star Nike program, winning the Nike Nationals Championship in 2007 led by April Sykes (Rutgers) , Tiffany Hayes (UConn) and Chelsea Lee (Rutgers) . Husband, Kelvin Powell, also a grassroots veteran, was an original voting member and the director of the Lady 76ers Nike sponsored travel club during the Mary Thompson era. Thompson, was director of Nike Girl’s Grassroots Basketball for ten years. Under her guidance, Nike took the lead in national tournaments and skills academies for girls. The Loyola College grad and coach signed 45 high school teams, 24 travel clubs, and organized 16 individual player camp events.
